Spring Semester  2008  Tutors

GREGORY CASS

I’m very excited to be back in the Writing Center this year especially because I will be acting as Head Tutor! I’m originally from the great state of New Hampshire (Live Free or Die!) but have been living here in Boston for 6 years now and enjoying every minute of it. I’m entering my second year in the MA/PhD program here at Northeastern and teaching a brand new course. In my time here, I’ve taught ENG111, ENG301 and now am taking my first crack at ENG304, the AWD for business majors. However, my favorite part of working in the Writing Center is getting to read so many interesting papers from areas in which I am not an expert, so bring me anything!

My academic pursuits revolve mostly along that expansive body of work known as the Epic tradition, particularly Homer, Virgil and Milton. In my free time I enjoy watching The Office (British or American) and Arrested Development on DVD, relieving stress with a bit of Call of Duty, or, perhaps most of all, continuing construction on my 6-year-old, 10-inch diameter rubber band ball.

You’ll find I’m laid back and approachable, so come on by for a session or just a chat…bonus points for bringing me large rubber bands!

ALLISON HUDSON

I am a MA student in the English Department. I received my BA in
English from Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand, where I
lived for many years. I have worked in the Writing Center previously. I
really enjoy the chance to help students one-on-one
with their writing - no problem is too big or too small. When I'm not
hard at work studying literature, I like to travel and play Nintendo.

RACHEL JYLKKA

I’m from the small, coastal, (tourist) town of Rockport, Massachusetts, where I grew up with three older sisters and a younger brother.  I am happy to have Boston as my home at present.  I have a BA in English from Connecticut College (where I also minored in music performance).  I did a creative writing concentration at old Conn. Coll., so I’m happy to work on creative or critical writing.  I’m in the MA program in English here at Northeastern and am currently teaching English U111.  My interests in literature are pretty wide-ranging from Michael Cunningham to Charlotte Brontë to J.M. Coetzee.  Favorite TV shows: House, Project Runway, and The Office.

ADRIANA MACIAS

I'm a second year PhD student at Northeastern. My
research interests are in early American Literature and its ever
changing depictions in popular culture. However, I'm also interested
learning more about teaching techniques and how to use new technology
in the classroom. Originally from California, I'm slowly learning
how to walk in snow and master a form of fashion called "layers."

APARNA MUJUMDAR

I am a third year PhD student in English. I teach Freshman Writing (ENG111) and AWD. My academic interests are Anglophone Literature,  Contemporary 20th century British Literature, post-colonial studies, gender studies and narrative theory. Outside school, I am particularly interested in art-color and design fascinate me and I have a crazy cat I love hanging out with.

STEPHANIE PAPPAS

A bit about me:  I’m a third-year PhD student in Rhetoric and
Composition here at Northeastern, where I teach College Writing and
AWD.  Most recently, I’ve been writing about ways to incorporate
Facebook into the writing classroom and challenging former students to
games of Scrabulous.  When I’m not on campus, I’m watching The Wire or
any of Joss Whedon’s shows or scouring grocery stores for new
ingredients.  I’m also looking for the next great grammar joke or
cartoon, so bring one to your next appointment!

A bit about my teaching philosophy:  You may not realize it, but you’ve
already assembled lots of resources in your writing toolbox:  a perfect
pen, a favorite place to write, the right snacks and energy drinks to
keep you writing late into the evening.  Think of me, a Writing Center
tutor, as just one more of those tools, which can help you develop a
paper topic, organize a paper, or improve your writing skills.
